Celebrating National Burrito Day With New York Food Trucks

Burritos are more than a popular Tex-Mex dish, they’re a celebrated comfort food that can be enjoyed any time of day. While they may have first gotten their popularity in Los Angeles nearly a century ago, did you know that some of New York’s finest food trucks are home to some of the most delicious burritos from coast-to-coast?

April 2nd marks “National Burrito Day,” celebrating the delicious and versatile Mexican dish wrapped in a tortilla.

First introduced in the United States in 1930 at a cafe in Los Angeles called El Cholo, the burrito has captured the hearts (and appetites) of Americans for over almost a century.

But, did you know that some of New York’s finest food trucks boast some of the best burritos in the nation. Let’s take a look at a few who are serving up these filling crowd-pleasers.

El Toro Rojo takes the art of “burrito perfection” seriously and it makes sense that the name of this Long Island City-based food truck also happens to be the name of a superhero in the “Marvel Universe.” Founded by Gabriel Apreza, his son Dennis, and daughter Jocely, El Toro Rojo is certainly a “family affair.”

Bringing authentic Oaxacan flavors throughout the streets of New York, El Rojo Toro is redefining authentic Mexican cuisine in The Big Apple. With burritos filled to the brim with saffron Mexican rice, pinto beans, Oaxaca cheese, pico de gallo, lettuce, guacamole, homemade salsas, and your choice of protein (chicken, steak, pork carnitas, chorizo, or make it vegetarian), El Toro Rojo will soon be your new go-to Mexican joint on-wheels.

Plus, El Toro Rojo knows how to feed a hungry crowd. So, check out this Vendy Award winner and hire them to cater your next corporate or private event.

Founded by husband and wife team Carlos and Caitlyn Napolitano in 2015, the English translation of their food truck Los Viajeros means “The Travelers,” represents their passion for cooking using their cultural and culinary experiences traveling abroad.

From their eclectic, hand-painted food truck to their burritos bursting with the flavors of Dominican, Cuban and Mexican cuisine, Los Viajeros takes their food to the next level. Check out their El Jefe burrito, a best-seller, served with brown rice, Ropa Vieja, maduros (sweet plantains), Monterey Jack cheese, jalapeños, and chipotle aioli.

And Los Viajeros has the accolades to back up their mouth-watering menu. In 2016, Los Viajeros was nominated for “Rookie of the Year” at that year’s Vendy Awards and in 2017, Caitlyn Napolitano won the champion title on Food Network’s hit show “Chopped.”

So, why not get a taste of the best Central American and Caribbean cuisine for lunch or even feature this award-winning food truck at your brand’s next promotion or large-scale event

“National Burrito Day” may only come once a year, but is there even such a thing as a bad day to eat a burrito? While most chain restaurants across the U.S. feature special deals on that day, why not forgo that generic, premade burrito and instead sample authentic eats from food trucks in New York that will leave you wanting to celebrate “National Burrito Day” everyday.
