The New York City Department of Correction is responsible for the custody, control, and care of New York City’s imprisoned population, with Rikers Island accounting for roughly quarter of all NYC inmates. Because NYC’s largest jail requires more than 10,000 staff members to manage on a day-to-day basis, the DOC wanted to show appreciation for Rikers staff members through a three-month-long, one-of-a-king catering experience produced by NYFTA.
- Allie Robertson, Event Planner
NYFTA helped Rikers show staff appreciation with a dynamic three month food truck catering experience. From October to December 2021, NYFTA brought more than 20 food trucks to the East River island, including Uncle Gussy, Angry Archies, Nuchas, Carlitos, The Steak Truck, Made From Scratch, Twisted Steaks, Made From Scratch, Nathan’s, Jiannetto’s, GG’s Fish & Chips, Empire BBQ, Souvlaki GR, and more, accumulating into an impressive 20,000 meals total. Feeding and fueling Rikers’ staff of guards, admins, cafeteria and maintenance workers, over many months was the best way to remind the staff that their hard work is acknowledged and appreciated everyday.
From Greek cuisine to American comfort food, NYFTA's suite of top-tier food trucks was able to satisfy any and every craving. By partnering with NYFTA to book and coordinate the best mobile caterers in all five boroughs and beyond, the NY DOC had the opportunity to show staff appreciation for the tens of thousands of Rikers employees who keep NYC's largest jail up and running.
